It has come to our attention that criminals are impersonating officials from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts or its employees. They are sending fraudulent emails to individuals and businesses, urging them to download files via Transfer XL. The hyperlinks provided in these emails direct recipients to malicious websites. Visiting these sites may compromise your personal information and expose your computer to viruses.
If you receive such an email (see example below), please take the following immediate actions:
- Do not respond to the email.
- Block the sender of the email.
- Change your password on any accounts affected, updating it through the Texas Statewide HUB System.
- Update your antivirus software and perform a full system scan.
If you have already opened the email and clicked on any links:
- Report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Follow the FTC’s guidance on preventing identity theft.
