IRS Updates 2025: Faster Refunds and Enhanced Security with IP PINs

The IRS is introducing updates for the 2025 filing season to enhance taxpayer security and prevent refund delays. One key change is that e-filed tax returns claiming dependents listed on another return will be accepted if the primary taxpayer provides a valid Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN). This improvement eliminates the need for paper-filing duplicate dependent returns, speeding up refunds—especially for those claiming credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit. Taxpayers are encouraged to register for an IP PIN, though the system will be undergoing maintenance until early January 2025.

An IP PIN is a six-digit code to protect taxpayers from identity theft and fraudulent dependent claims. Taxpayers can easily obtain an IP PIN through the IRS Online Account, which provides access to prior tax records and account details. Using an IP PIN when filing electronically ensures faster processing of legitimate dependent claims, helping taxpayers receive their refunds more efficiently.
