04 Nov 2021 Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN
ACTION REQUIRED! We strongly recommend all individual taxpayers apply for an IRS issued Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN). This is an extra step to help prevent tax fraud. A significant amount of fraudulent return filings occur shortly after e-filing opens in January. We encourage both the taxpayer and spouse, if jointly filing, to obtain an IP PIN for each person. If you applied for an IP PIN in the past no action is needed. A new IP PIN is automatically generated each year for your account.
The IP PIN program is an effective way to prevent identity thieves from filing, or continuing to file, fraudulent tax returns to receive illegitimate refunds. The IP PIN number would also eliminate any subsequent Identity Verification requirement that would delay the processing of your return.
Important Information about IP PINs
- The IP PIN is a 6-digit number you receive annually from the IRS and include on your tax return each year.
- A new IP PIN is generated each year for your account.
- Logging back into the Get an IP PIN tool, will display your current IP PIN.
- If you are a confirmed victim of tax-related identity theft and the IRS resolved your tax account issues, they will mail you a CP01A Notice with your new IP PIN each year.
- The IP PIN tool is generally available starting in mid-January through mid-November. You must apply by Nov. 15, 2021 or wait until it reopens again mid-January.
